The media: a major source of definition of fashion

If you are a Public relations student you would know that the media is divided into different types of media namely amongst  the few are  new age media, electronic and print media which includes your books, newspapers, magazines and the list goes on. The media are the eyes and ears of society they feed us with knowledge and issues happening globally. Francois Nell writes in the “writing for the media in southern Africa” book that the media is a major source of definitions and that it is a yardstick for deciding what is normal. Meaning that we as society accept what the media dishes out to us without disputing it. It defines what is normal, what we wear, how we speak and most sadly who we are. Which brings me to the /my point about fashion, that  it is decided for us what is appropriate to wear what is not by the media or rather through the media ,everyday we are bombarded  with colours, styles and patterns that are in for that season about what is appropriate to wear and what is fashionable.  By the time one starts adapting to that style than there is already a new one replacing that one. Personally I believe that fashion is about culture, music, art, having fun with fabrics and colour and most of all it is about a lifestyle. Individuals express themselves, their true character through the fashion and clothes they wear.

Fashion is a huge aspect in the 21st century, Nowadays your dressing style is a big deal it is a deciding factor on the kind  of “clique” you associate yourself with and most of all fashion nowadays is the deciding factor on whether one can be taken serious or not in society or amongst  friends. People should start realising that the media does not always have to set trends for them to be fashionable anyone can set their own unique trend and own it!!!!  Wear what makes you feel beautiful.

  1. yes i agree fashion is dicatated by the media an examlple would be how if a very popular rapper wears something on a music video then it is guaranteed that you will see everyone else wearing it, which i think is pathetic really but is the sort of power the media has over fashion and many other aspects in life

    1. Exactly why can’t people come up with their own style? Because I mean if we observe very carefully on all the trends the media set for us, we would actually realise that not all are hot...

  2. I think that the media sort of helps fashion get out there yo start the trends. I mean without media we wouldn't really be as exposed to fashion as we are at the moment.

    1. By writing this blog am not defacing the fact that "the media gets fashion out there". all I am saying is that it should let people dress how they feel is comfortable and suitable for them without bashing them or putting them down by having programmes such as Fashion police and what not to wear, Were they criticise people.

  3. Very interesting and relatable blog about the interconnection of Media and fashion.
Media and fashion have pushed each other to another level, they are practically best friends.
And both have made each other stronger and brought people together.

  4. Good thing about this interconnection is that media keeps people updated with the latest trends and gives people a wonderful way of expressing how they feel and who they are through what they wear.

  5. What scares me about this interconnection is that the marketing and advertising(media side) is very Manipulative and Controlling because it makes people believe that a certain trend looks good or is for everyone even though we come in different sizes, but because trends are in newspapers,on tv or worn by high profile individuals then it automatically gives the go ahead to the normal individual who doesn't consider whether something looks good or bad on them but just imitates what has been advertised.
In this way people are blinded.
Media and fashion have a stronger influence on people than we think.

  6. Media and fashion will always be finger and nail. People rely on it for latest trends, most of us are not trend setters but followers... so yes media via tv, magazines, internet, etc will always keep people in touch with the latest trends. It's good for people, but we must know what looks good on us according to your height, weight, etc... even complexion when choosing colours. Remember we don't only wear clothes, even hair, make up, etc...

  7. As a fashion student i do agree that fashion and media will always have a best friends type of relationship towards each other.people will always want to follow their style icons or celebrity's closet style, but i mean we need to draw the line when it comes to people taking their style icon's fashion styles and using it for themselves, like Zero said. its ok to look at those styles and use them but be practical and logical about it.you can not want to dress like RIRI on tour while you work in the business sector

    1. I like the fact where you say "people have to be practical" because people tend to copy what celebrities wear and forget that some outfits have a certain place and events to be worn to.

  8. The media is very influential when it comes to setting trends, especially when it comes to new social and digital media. These trends, `trend` on twitter and people adopt them. If for the good or bad, thats another story.

  10. This is so pleasing in the eye, well said ma'am, it is true that media tells us what’s normal and what’s not, it'll take great courage for one to wear their own style and self-esteem is not our strongest virtue

  13. personally i feel that people will never really wear what they want , the media has set trends and people feel the pressure to step it up to fit in >>>but hopefully they will see the light some of these days.

    1. I agree with you Massy, most people think that if they do not dress a certain way or follow every fashion trend that comes in, that they will not be accepted or fit in into society.

  14. before i go any futher i would lik to state that what im about to say is based purely on my knowledge and experties as a fashion and celebrity stylist and now fashion editor of a magazine. there is a difference between style and trend, a trend is set by fashion houses i.e gucci, DnG etc. a trend can be a colour, pattern, fabric or design or a garment. style is how one outs together the trend to FIT thier personality. the media can only show you through shoots how to wear certain things which are trending currently, it can NOT dectate to you what your style is or should be. @krayzik

  15. I totally agree with you, people should realise that their style should define who you are, an extention of your personality

  16. I'm strongly in agreement with Bongani, people should wear clothes that define who they are.

  17. fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment.
